and Shedding Some Light On The Light Bulb
The
First True Incandescent Light Bulb
If you think that Thomas Alva Edison invented the light
bulb then you'd certainly be in the majority, but being in the majority
doesn't mean that you're right.
How
Light Bulbs Work
The light bulb hasn't changed a whole lot in its 120 years -- the
original design was just that good. Apparently, you can throw together
a filament, a glass mount, an inert gas and a bit of electricity
and change the world. Learn what happens when you flip that light
switch.

History of Incandescent Bulbs, It is fairly well known that Thomas
Alva Edison invented the first reasonably practical incandescent
lamp, using a carbon filament in a bulb containing a vacuum.
Museum
of Historic Discharge Lamps
Since Sir Humphry Davy demonstrated the first electric arc at the
Royal Institution of Great Britain in 1802, electric discharge light
sources have been intensely researched for one fundamental reason
- that they create light from electricity more efficiently than
any other kind of artificial light source.
Shedding Some
Light On The Light Bulb
Where would we be without the Light Bulb? We would all be in the
dark of course.
The basics of a light bulb first came into functionality
in 1812 by the British chemist Sir Humphrey Davy. He demonstrated
the glow of incandescence from electric current by heating platinum
strips in the open air using electricity.
The first patent for an incandescent lamp was awarded
to British inventor Frederick de Moleyns in 1841; he used powdered
charcoal heated between two platinum wires as the source of illumination.
The incandescent lamp is based on the principle of
incandescence, in which solids and gases emit visible light when
burning or when an electric current heats them to a sufficiently
high temperature. Each material gives off light in a color characteristic
of that material.
The invention of vacuum pumps made it possible to
create incandescent lamps that could be used for regular lighting.
In 1878 British scientist Sir Joseph Wilson Swan invented the modern
light bulb, which uses carbon filaments in evacuated glass bulbs.
So who was Thomas Alva Edison?
It was not until 1879 that through many hours of hard research that
he also discovered the light bulb. But it was through his continued
efforts that the light bulb ever became what it is today.
This was a time of hardships for many people and
changing from a cheap economical source of lighting to one that
at that time was out of the average persons ability to afford was
out of the question. But as most novelties go the rich have the
ability to provide the funds if it is interesting enough.
The light bulb of today has undergone many
changes since that time of 120 years ago. Most people do not even
keep candles in the house and feel that light bulbs are necessity
rather than a luxury.
